I posted a video of the Jacob's Ladder I built. Below is a link to the YouTube video and some some photos of the a couple of the construction details.

The length of the risers is about 35 inches overall and the arc travels over about 30 inches. I use a variable transformer to adjust the primary voltage of the high voltage transfomer to obtain the most stable operation.
To obtain the desired high voltage, there is a smaller transformer the ups the AC to about 200 volts in the primary of the high voltage transformer.
So you can see, the entire rig is a lethal hazard because no part can be grounded to any other part or the main supply.
Do not try to duplicate this demostration!
This device is can be lethal and should not be built by anyone.
I used 2 resistors, each 1.2 meg Ohm and 2 watts, in series to construct a starter for the climbing arc. By positioning one end between the risers, the arc is easy to start and it climbs readily.
